Vanyou ideas

Overshadowed by the popularity of the neighbouring Cabo de Gata beaches — a quintessential campervan destination — the beaches of Águilas and Mazarrón hide corners that have nothing to envy from their southern neighbours. Discover this small paradise where you can enjoy a campervan adventure.

Águilas is a municipality in the Murcia region, located along the Costa Cálida in the Gulf of Mazarrón.

We suggest this getaway with one of our campervans. From Valencia it'll take you about three and a half hours.

Just like Cabo de Gata, we recommend travelling by van outside summer high season — we were there in January and even enjoyed a swim in the sea. You'll find many advantages by avoiding crowded beaches; you'll be able to sleep right by the sea, listening to the sound of the waves while enjoying your Vanyou van.

Travelling off-season you can stop with the van almost anywhere. We've created a Google map with some of the beaches and corners you shouldn't miss, and we let you discover plenty more on your Vanyou trip.

You can also complement overnight stays with the famous van-friendly spots: http://www.furgovw.org/mapa_furgoperfecto Our trip started in Águilas and we headed north along the coast — you can choose any direction.

Water quality is incredible and the landscapes spectacular. We felt much freer than at Cabo de Gata, which lately has many restrictions on wild overnight stays with the van.

From Águilas to Bolnuevo there are countless deserted coves and beaches; once you reach Bolnuevo and continue on to Mazarrón things change quite a bit — we enter very touristy areas and the urban development is very noticeable. Still, in Bolnuevo we recommend stopping to see the Bolnuevo Erosions: very peculiar sandy formations.

We also recommend seeing the Hornillo pier, an old mineral pier built at the beginning of the 20th century, accessed from Las Delicias beach via the Fransena urbanisation and from Hornillo beach.

Visit La Azohía, in this beautiful place fishermen working the tuna trap (almadraba) go out to sea every day from February to June. Throughout the season the structure of the almadraba — a tangle of nets — remains in the water. Also stop by to visit Torre de Santa Elena. A few kilometres from La Azohía you can also visit Cabo Tiñoso.

Ask us about our Google map and we'll share the link. Here you have just a few hints of what you can discover on the Costa Cálida — don't think twice, set aside 4 days to tour these magical beaches by van.
