Imagine a sunset while enjoying an aperitif of the best products from Mallorca. Sounds good, right? It sounds even better if you can do it from the comfort and privacy of a fully equipped campervan. Join the Vanyou family to make this dream come true!

Mallorca has everything visitors expect from an unmistakable destination like the island: delicious flavours, inviting aromas and exclusive products that make its gastronomy unique in the world.

Today we set off on a gastronomic route to tour the best flavours of Mallorca in our Vanyou — will you join us?

Sobrasada

One of the most recognised products, you can find it in practically any butcher's shop or shop of Mallorcan products. It's a raw cured sausage, made from carefully selected cuts of pork and seasoned with salt, pepper and paprika; presented in casing and slowly matured. With a powerful and unctuous flavour, it can be eaten the traditional way (with bread) or as part of countless sweet or savoury dishes such as eggs, pasta, rice… in any case it's delicious!

Ensaimada

Legend has it that, in the late 15th century, Mallorcan Jews began to add lard to the traditional braided bread they prepared in order to prove they had converted to Christianity to avoid persecution, thus giving rise to the ensaimada.

Whatever its origin — Jewish, Muslim or Christian — centuries later it's still the best example of Mallorcan gastronomy: a delicious spiral dough carefully baked and dusted with fine icing sugar.

We recommend trying the ones from Horno Santo Cristo (with several patisseries in Palma and Sóller) or the delicious ensaimadas baked at Tomeu Arbona's workshop, El Fornet de la Soca, in Palma.

Alongside this traditional recipe, today you can also find them filled with chocolate, cream, "cabello de ángel" (pumpkin jam), sobrasada (tallades) or apricot — you won't be able to try just one variety!

Pa amb oli

One of the most typical preparations of Balearic gastronomy: a delicious brown bread (typical of Mallorca) with juicy ramillete tomatoes rubbed in, drizzled with olive oil, accompanied with whatever you can think of — from the traditional toppings (sobrasada, Mahón cheese or camaiot) to modern creations with sirloin, smoked fish or octopus… in any case, impressive!

To try some of the best pa amb oli on the island, we recommend Bar Cabrera (two locations in Palma) or S'Hostal in Montuiri, a perfect spot to break the journey and refuel ;)

Almonds

Another product that's part of the gastronomy of the entire Mediterranean, used for centuries in all kinds of sweet and savoury dishes.

You shouldn't miss the chance to taste them alone or in any of their preparations. Did you know that one of the island's typical desserts is made with this ingredient? Keep reading!

Gató

The gató is a spongy sponge cake made from almonds and eggs and dusted with icing sugar, which you can find at almost any patisserie on the island.

You also shouldn't miss the traditional granizado de almendra (almond slush), enjoyed especially to relieve the heat of the summer months. Delicious!

Try it together with a coca de patata at Ca'n Molinas, in the heart of Valldemossa.

Carob

Perhaps the least known product — typically Mediterranean and absolutely natural, gluten-free and an important source of fibre. In recent years carob has gained more and more prominence thanks to its versatility — from flour to pizzas, pancakes, sponge cakes or tarts, carob is carving an important place in Mallorcan gastronomy.

Many already call this singular product "Mallorca's chocolate". Don't miss the products from Johannis d'Es Garrover; you can find them in any Agromart on the island (Palma, Sóller, Bunyola, Inca, Sa Pobla…)

In any case we ask for your help in protecting the ecosystem that makes these gifts of nature possible — respect the surroundings and enjoy the environment responsibly aboard your Vanyou.
